Student Safety in Pierce County and Kitsap Takes Priority With Verizon and Beyond Ride Collaboration

For most parents, the school commute is one part of the day they simply can’t see. Once a child boards a vehicle for school, or a senior heads out for a medical appointment, families are left trusting that the ride goes as planned. Beyond Ride is aiming to close that gap with a fleet-wide rollout of real-time monitoring across every vehicle it operates in Pierce and Kitsap counties.

Using Verizon Connect technology, Beyond Ride has equipped its full fleet with live GPS tracking, driver behavior monitoring, in-cab activity monitoring, and full interior and exterior video and audio recording. The rollout spans student transportation, special education transportation, and non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) routes across Tacoma, Puyallup, Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard, and Gig Harbor.

The system gives Beyond Ride’s operations team, school transportation directors, and authorized parents the ability to check vehicle location, route adherence, driver conduct, and trip activity as it happens, rather than relying on reports pieced together after the fact. A company spokesperson framed the shift directly: parents and families arranging medical rides want more than reassurance, they want documented proof that a ride went as expected, every time.

That visibility gap has been a persistent frustration for transportation directors across the South Puget Sound region. Confirming that a vehicle stayed on route, that a driver operated safely, or that an incident was properly documented has historically meant relying on costly custom telematics setups or slow manual reporting. The same problem shows up in medical transportation, where seniors and patients depending on NEMT rides in Tacoma and Kitsap County often have no way to check a vehicle’s status mid-trip. For families coordinating special education transportation, the stakes run even higher given the additional handling and timing these routes require.

Beyond Ride’s system is built on four layers, all running through Verizon Connect hardware installed in every vehicle. Real-time GPS tracking lets schools, fleet managers, and parents verify location, stops, and trip movement live. Driver behavior monitoring continuously tracks speed, braking, acceleration, idling, and route deviations, with the operations team reviewing and addressing anything that falls outside expected safety parameters. In-cab activity monitoring adds oversight specifically on routes serving children, seniors, and other vulnerable riders. Full video and audio recording captures every trip from pickup to drop-off, creating a record available to Beyond Ride’s team and, where relevant, school district transportation offices.

The rollout applies uniformly across the company’s service area, covering student transportation in Tacoma and Puyallup, special needs and disability student transportation routes, and NEMT service throughout Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard, and Gig Harbor. Beyond Ride notes that families with specific accessibility needs should confirm vehicle equipment directly with the company before booking.

Monitoring data will continue to be made available to school offices upon request as part of the company’s standard reporting practices, with the program now running across the company’s full fleet in both counties.
