Spirit Airlines Is Gone Forever: Here’s Exactly What to Do If You Have a Ticket
By David Cooper | IAmericanTimes.com | May 3, 2026
Spirit Airlines is officially gone. The bright yellow planes, the cheap fares, the fees for everything, all of it ended at 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, May 2, 2026. After 34 years in the sky, one of America’s most controversial budget airlines shut down overnight, canceled every single flight, and left thousands of passengers scrambling at airports across the country.
If you had a Spirit ticket, whether for a trip next week or next month, here is exactly what you need to do right now.
What Happened? Here’s the Short Version
Spirit Airlines did not have a slow death. It had a sudden one.
The airline had been struggling for years, filing for bankruptcy twice in less than two years. But what finally pushed it over the edge was jet fuel. The war with Iran sent oil prices soaring, and Spirit, which had budgeted for fuel at around $2.24 per gallon, was suddenly paying about $4.51 per gallon. That single spike added an estimated $360 million in costs the airline simply could not absorb.
Spirit’s last hope was a $500 million rescue deal with the Trump administration. That deal collapsed after a key group of creditors rejected the terms. President Trump himself acknowledged the situation on Friday, saying a deal may not be possible. By 3:00 a.m. Saturday, it was over.
Spirit’s collapse is the first time in 25 years that a major U.S. airline has gone out of business due to financial trouble, the last time was Midway Airlines, which shut down immediately after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Step 1: Do NOT Go to the Airport
If you have an upcoming Spirit flight, do not go to the airport expecting help. Spirit has shut down all customer service. There are no agents at the check-in counters. The airline’s website no longer works for bookings. Its customer service phone line is disconnected.
The airline put it plainly on its website: “All flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available.”
Going to the airport will only cost you time and parking money.
Step 2: Find Out How You Paid — It Changes Everything
This is the most important step. How you purchased your Spirit ticket determines exactly how, and whether, you get your money back.
Paid with a credit or debit card directly through Spirit?
You are in the best position. Spirit has confirmed it will automatically process refunds for tickets purchased directly through the airline with a credit or debit card. You do not need to call anyone. The refund should come back to your card, though it may take several business days.
As extra protection, you can also contact your bank or credit card company and request a chargeback under the Fair Credit Billing Act. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy specifically encouraged passengers to do this. A chargeback is a formal dispute that instructs your bank to reverse the charge for services that were never provided.
Booked through a travel agency, Expedia, or a third-party site?
Spirit’s automatic refund does not apply to you. You need to contact the travel agency or third-party platform directly and request a refund through them. The process may take longer, but you are still entitled to your money back.
Paid with Spirit vouchers, travel credits, or Free Spirit points?
This is the hardest situation. Your refund will be determined through the bankruptcy court process, not by Spirit directly. Travel expert Clint Henderson from The Points Guy was blunt about it: “Basically, if you have Spirit points from the loyalty program, those points are essentially worthless.” You can file a claim in the bankruptcy proceedings, but loyalty point holders are typically last in line for any payments, and there is no guarantee of recovery.
Save screenshots of your account balance and any confirmation emails now, before those systems go offline entirely.
Step 3: How to Book a New Flight Without Paying Full Price
Here is the good news. The federal government stepped in fast. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced an agreement with major airlines to cap fares for Spirit passengers and prevent prices from skyrocketing.
Here is what each airline is offering, and for how long:
United Airlines
- Most one-way fares capped at $199, with some longer routes up to $299
- Available for the next two weeks
- Book online at United.com/specialfares, you will need your Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment
- United had already rebooked about 14,000 Spirit passengers within just 12 hours of the shutdown
JetBlue
- $99 one-way rescue fares for travelers with immediate travel needs
- Call 1-800-JETBLUE, available for 72 hours from the announcement
- Also capping fares on the Fort Lauderdale to San Juan, Puerto Rico route at $299 through May 8
Southwest Airlines
- Fares capped based on distance: $200 for flights under 500 miles, $300 up to 1,000 miles, and $400 for anything longer
- Only available in person at Southwest airport ticket counters, not online
- Must show a Spirit confirmation number. Available through May 6
American Airlines
- Reduced fares on routes it shares with Spirit
- Book through the American Airlines app or at aa.com
- Also adding larger aircraft on high-demand Spirit routes to increase available seats
Delta Air Lines
- Reduced, nonrefundable rescue fares on domestic routes and some international routes
- Available for five days from the announcement
Frontier Airlines
- Use promo code SAVENOW for 10% to 50% off base fares
- Offer valid for bookings made by May 10, 2026, with travel through November 19, 2026
- The 50% discount applies to travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays booked at least 21 days in advance
Avelo Airlines
- Advertising up to 75% off base fares to attract stranded travelers
Hertz (not an airline, but worth knowing)
- Offering one-way car rental deals for passengers who need to drive between cities instead of flying
Important: Keep a copy of your Spirit itinerary and confirmation number. Every airline offering rescue fares requires proof that you had a Spirit booking.
Step 4: If You Are Stranded Mid-Trip Right Now
If you are already at your destination and had a return Spirit flight, you are on your own for the new ticket cost, Spirit will not reimburse those out-of-pocket expenses.
Your best moves right now:
- Check your travel insurance policy. If you purchased a separate travel insurance plan (not just the one that comes with your credit card), call your provider immediately. Some policies cover airline insolvency, meaning they will pay for your new ticket.
- Credit card travel protections are less helpful here. Most card-included travel insurance policies have fine print that excludes airline financial insolvency as a covered event. Do not count on this.
- Book a rescue fare as fast as possible. These capped prices will not last. Industry analyst Henry Harteveldt warned that once summer travel demand kicks in, prices on Spirit routes could spike significantly, Spirit had historically been the only affordable option on many of these routes.
What This Means for Airline Prices Going Forward
Even after you rebook, Spirit’s shutdown is going to affect American travelers for months.
A CBS News analysis of flight data found that in previous cases when Spirit exited a route, average round-trip fares rose by about 23%, roughly $60 more per round trip. Passenger traffic on those routes also fell by about 20%, as some travelers simply could not afford the higher prices.
Spirit served dense leisure markets: Florida, the Caribbean, parts of the Northeast, and low-income travelers who could not afford mainstream airlines. Those travelers now have fewer options and higher prices.
Industry experts expect budget carriers like Frontier, Avelo, Breeze, and Allegiant to eventually expand into the markets Spirit left behind, but that could take three to six months at minimum, after summer travel season is already over.
The Bottom Line
If you had a Spirit ticket:
- Credit/debit card booked directly: Automatic refund coming. Also initiate a chargeback with your bank to be safe.
- Third-party booking: Contact your travel agency or platform for a refund now.
- Points or vouchers: File a claim in bankruptcy. Recovery is unlikely.
- Rebooking: Use the rescue fares above. Act fast, these deals expire within days.
- Stranded mid-trip: Buy a new ticket and check your travel insurance policy.
Spirit Airlines is gone. But the passengers left behind are not out of options. Move quickly, keep every piece of documentation, and contact your bank if a refund does not appear within the next few business days.
